Glaze notes
A shelf of glaze tiles
A glaze tile is most useful when you can connect its surface to a specific firing. Press a short code into the clay while it is soft. Use the same code in your notes for the clay body, glaze, application and firing.
Build in a comparison
Leave a strip bare and vary the application on the rest. A groove and a rounded edge make it easier to see where the glaze pools and where it breaks thin. Keep tiles upright if you plan to compare them with the walls of a vessel.
Look twice
Write down what you notice after unloading, then look again in daylight. Keep a photo next to the physical tile so that you can compare later without relying on the colour in a single image.
